In my view yes, given the way they're absolutely driving Brett Favre away from their team.
But then, maybe the whole team has gone batty--ESPN today reports that there's a big sigh of relief among the team and coaches today, now that they know Favre will be leaving.
Wow. Once again--yes, Favre waffled over his retirement. Yes, this has dragged on for a long time. Yes, I'm sure Favre said some things to Green Bay management that they didn't like, just as reports over the past couple days suggest that Packers' brass said and did things that Favre didn't like. Still: does anyone doubt that the Packers would be a better team this year with Favre than without him? How in the heck can it be so hard for Packers management to decide to have an open competition for the QB position? Aaron Rodgers would still have had a chance to win the starting job fair and square. Favre in his statements has given every indication that he would have accepted such an arrangement.
But no. And you know what? The whole thing makes me sad. It shouldn't. I grew up (and still am) a big Detroit Lions fan, being a native of Michigan. I always disliked the Pack; I wanted the Lions to beat 'em. No Favre gives the Lions a better chance. Right? But still...I also love the NFL, and the game...and Brett Favre to me IS the Green Bay Packers. He should end his career with them, just as Joe DiMaggio ended his career with the Yankees and Bill Russell ended his career with the Celtics. That's the way it should have been. It was right. This Favre "divorce" (as many media types are calling it) just isn't right. Favre won't look right in a Tampa Bay Bucs uniform. Will he?
What's going on here? What are the Packers doing? They're messing with karma here. And it's going to come back to bite them.
