That's what new British PM Gordon Brown's minister for Africa, Asia and the UN, Lord Malloch-Brown, is saying. Excerpt: "Last October, when Lord Malloch-Brown was the UN's deputy secretary general, he told EU diplomats in Brussels that the EU was heading towards one single seat within the UN institutions. "I think it will go in stages. We are going to see a growing spread of it institution by institution," he was reported as saying. Lord Malloch-Brown said he hoped it would happen "as quickly as possible. I'm a huge fan of it."
He did say that before becoming a government minister. But there's no indication he's changed his mind. I doubt this will actually happen. There are thinkers out there who dream of the end of the nation-state and of the creation of some kind of world government. Such folks believe that the nation-state inevitably leads to the growth of nationalism, and they believe nationalism in turn leads to rivalries, ethnocentrism, hatreds, and war. Myself, I think nationalism is just something that inevitably is, along with the existence of different cultures and societies. We couldn't do away with it or eliminate it any more than we could eliminate all the different languages that exist, or the fact that all human beings have a nose. Nor do I think we'll ever see a day when citizens of the Ukraine (for example) would be okay with residents of Zimbabwe having a say in Ukrainian affairs. But for some, the dream will never die...
