The horse race: GOP nomination

The latest Rasmussen poll has Fred Thompson leading by three points nationally. Rudy Giuliani is second. Thompson's rise certainly has been impressive; meteoric, even. But remember this: if there's one thing this campaign is showing us, it's that when you're thinking about running, obviously going to run, but not quite in yet, if you've got some name recognition and some cred, you get a honeymoon. Your numbers rise (see: Obama, Barack). But soon, the honeymoon ends, you have to actually campaign and be specific; you might offend somebody; and your numbers will go down.

So when Thompson's numbers decline, who will benefit? Stay tuned.
