...and what goes better with the 4th of July than, first, baseball--and if you missed this terrific George Will review of what appears to be an excellent book on the season of 1908, read it now. There's also of course the history of our country--that is, the meaning of freedom. And who better to help you grapple with that than Abraham Lincoln and one of his great speeches from the 1858 Illinois Senate campaign, which he would wage against Stephen A. Douglas. Lincoln's ongoing conversation with Douglas, himself, the South, etc etc on the meaning of the phrase 'all men are created equal" is timeless, and forever instructive...especially today.
But listen, be really careful with the fireworks today, okay? This story is a tragic reminder of why you should. So sad, and our hearts go out to this family.
